44yr Old Artisan Wins N1Million In Wema Bank’s 5 For 5 Promo

A 44-year-old artisan, Alade Rafiu Aliu, has emerged as the one million naira winner in the September draw of Wema Bank’s 5for5 promo.

The promo which commenced in July 2021, has seen over 200 customers win cash prizes by conducting transactions via the digital banking platform, ALAT, or the bank’s USSD code *945#.

In August and September, the promo had already rewarded customers in Osogbo and Benin making two lucky customers millionaires before making a pit stop in the Centre of Excellence.

Alade, a welder, who has been practising his trade for about 20 years was presented his cheque on Thursday, October 14, 2021, at his bank branch at Old Motorway Road, Agege. He came in the company of his friends, one of whom had been used to track the rather evasive winner.

After he was announced as the million naira winner during the live draws, Alade was hard to reach and all efforts to track him down seemed futile. However, his transactions were tracked, and the bank reached out to his close friend, who ended up calling the winner.

“At first, when they called me, I thought they were fraudsters. However, when they explained how they got my phone number, I became scared and denied I knew him. I thought someone had hacked my friend’s account since he (Alade) had lost his phone. But the more they spoke to me, I later relaxed and then went to call him to inform him about the good news.” said Owoyemi Dauda, Alade’s friend.

Alade added, “When he (Dauda) called me, I thought he was being scammed until he encouraged me to go to the bank the next day. The next day, I went to my bank branch in Agege along with him and immediately I walked in, all the staff were congratulating me; that was when I realised it was actually true.”

He went on to thank the bank for giving him the opportunity to improve his life, adding that, “I am grateful to Wema Bank because it’s not easy for someone to just give you a million naira without getting something in return. I am also grateful to the staff at the Agege branch for taking pains to track me down and ensure that I get my prize money and since I have been banking with them, I have not had issues.”

Alade plans to use his earnings to finish building his house and also invest in his and his wife’s business.

“Wema Bank is not only rewarding customers for opening an account, but we are also encouraging them to make transactions with us. So far, the lives of our winners have changed because we are giving them an opportunity to make a difference. We are not only creating financial freedom but we are also providing financial literacy on the various ways they can operate their Wema account like the USSD code and the ALAT app rather than visiting a physical bank,” stated the Divisional Head, Retail Business, Wema Bank Plc., Dotun Ifebogun while presenting the winner with his cheque.

Also in attendance were Head, Retail Cluster, Ikeja 1, Olukayode Adebayo; Head, Liability Products Unit, Temitope Ogundeji; Business Service Manager, Wema Bank, Agege; Mosunmola Fadeyi, and Business Development Manager, Wema Bank, Agege, Yewande Odedeji.

The 5for5 promo is a nine-month-long campaign and promises to continue to reward customers for their loyalty to ALAT and Wema bank.
