Senate Confirms Power, Foreign Affairs Ministers As Reform Agenda Takes Focus

The Leader of the Senate, Michael Opeyemi Bamidele, on Wednesday formally presented ministerial nominees before the upper chamber, as the Senate moved to strengthen key sectors through strategic appointments and rigorous screening.

The nominees-Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe and Ambassador Sola Enikanolaiye-were subsequently confirmed following detailed deliberations at plenary presided over by Senate President Godswill Akpabio.

Power Sector Reform Takes Centre Stage

Proceedings during the screening of the Minister of Power-designate were dominated by concerns over Nigeria’s persistent electricity challenges and the fragility of the national grid.

Lawmakers noted that while Nigeria has an installed generation capacity exceeding 13,000 megawatts, actual output remains around 4,500MW. Attempts to scale up supply, they observed, frequently trigger grid collapses, underscoring deep structural weaknesses in transmission and distribution systems.

The Senate called for urgent interventions to stabilise the grid, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and ensure that investments in the sector translate into tangible improvements for citizens. Issues of accountability also featured prominently, with emphasis on scrutinising the roles of engineers, contractors, and other stakeholders involved in grid maintenance and repairs.

Senate President Akpabio raised concerns about potential vested interests benefiting from recurring system failures, urging stricter oversight to restore efficiency and public confidence in the power sector.

In response, Tegbe pledged to prioritise strategic reforms, improve institutional coordination, and ensure disciplined implementation of policies aimed at delivering sustainable electricity supply to Nigerians.

Foreign Policy Repositioning in Focus

During his screening, Ambassador Enikanolaiye outlined a forward-looking foreign policy framework anchored on national interest, youth engagement, and global partnerships.

He proposed a three-pillar strategy centred on “power, policy, and people,” stressing that Nigeria’s diplomatic engagements must produce measurable benefits for its citizens at home and abroad.

A key highlight of his presentation was the need for a more assertive stance in protecting Nigerians in the diaspora, alongside increased youth participation in diplomacy and international affairs. He described youth engagement as essential to building long-term national capacity and global relevance.

The nominee also emphasised Nigeria’s leadership role within West Africa and the importance of strengthening partnerships with international allies, particularly in areas of democratic governance, security, and economic cooperation.

According to him, foreign policy must evolve beyond traditional diplomacy to directly support domestic development priorities, linking Nigeria’s global engagements with internal growth and stability.

A Strategic Moment

The confirmation of both ministers reflects the Senate’s broader commitment to aligning governance with pressing national challenges-particularly in the power sector and foreign policy.

As Nigeria continues to navigate infrastructure deficits and global uncertainties, expectations remain high that the newly confirmed ministers will translate policy into measurable outcomes for citizens.
