Akwa Ibom Declares Oct 5 Teaching-Free Day In Celebration Of 2026 World Teachers’ Day

The Akwa Ibom State Government, in collaboration with the Nigerian Union of Teachers (NUT), Akwa Ibom State Wing, will on Monday, October 5, 2026, celebrate the 2026 World Teachers’ Day with a special ceremony on Monday , October 5th, 2026 at the Uyo Township Stadium by 11 AM  Prompt.

The celebration, with the theme, “Standing with Teachers: 60 Years of Protecting the Profession, Advancing its Status and Shaping our Futures,” will have the Executive Governor of Akwa Ibom State, Pastor Umo Eno, Ph.D., as Special Guest of Honour, alongside government officials, education stakeholders, teachers, school administrators, members of the Nigerian Union of Teachers and other invited guests.

In recognition of the vital role teachers play in the development of the State, and to ensure their full participation in the celebration, His Excellency, Governor Umo Eno, has declared Monday, October 5, 2026, a Teaching-Free Day in Akwa Ibom State. Accordingly, all public primary and secondary schools across the State will be closed on the day to enable teachers to participate fully in the celebration and join their colleagues from across the 31 Local Government Areas.

The occasion will provide an opportunity for the State to honour and appreciate teachers for their invaluable contributions to education, human capital development and the overall progress of Akwa Ibom State, while reaffirming the commitment of the ARISE Administration to their welfare, professional growth, dignity and improved working environment.

The Governor Umo Eno-led Administration has demonstrated a clear commitment to education as a strategic social investment in the future of the State, with sustained interventions in school infrastructure, teacher recruitment and development, human capital development, teachers’ welfare and the provision of conducive learning environments. Education remains a major pillar of the ARISE Agenda, with deliberate efforts to strengthen teaching and learning and ensure that teachers are adequately supported to shape the next generation.

The Administration recognises that teachers are at the heart of every successful education system and that quality learning is closely linked to the quality, motivation, welfare and professional capacity of teachers. Consequently, the welfare and professional advancement of teachers remain integral to the State Government’s education policy and people-centred development agenda.

The State Government also acknowledges the important partnership with the Nigerian Union of Teachers, whose collaboration remains vital to promoting industrial harmony, professional excellence and the dignity of the teaching profession in Akwa Ibom State. The celebration therefore goes beyond a ceremonial gathering; it is a reaffirmation of the State’s appreciation of the men and women who dedicate their lives to teaching, mentoring and preparing young Akwa Ibomites for the future.

The Government calls on teachers, education stakeholders, parents, students and members of the public to join in celebrating the teaching profession and recognising the enduring contributions of teachers to the development of Akwa Ibom and Nigeria. The State Government warmly felicitates with teachers across the State and appreciates their dedication, sacrifice and enduring service to humanity.
