5 Reasons You Should See Africa Magic’s New Telenovelas, Covenant & Itura
Africa Magic premiered two brand new telenovelas, Itura and Covenant, on Monday, October 3, 2022, and so far, they’ve been fantastic.
Produced by James Omokwe and Femi Odugbemi, respectively, they started with a bang and were right in the middle of conflicts. From the intro of both films to the costuming, props and set, both series have been exciting, and they’ve had us slowly falling in love.
If you haven’t already started watching these series, you can catch up on DStv catch-up, the weekend omnibus set or Showmax. Still, if you need more motivation for why you should watch Itura and Covenant, here are five reasons why we are excited about them.
1. Covenant is apt for the Nigerian political climate:
Covenant is a political telenovela that follows the activities of the fictional Governor of Lagos, his ambition, family, and what it means to win the elections to maintain his seat and eventually become the president of Nigeria. The show is coming right at the beginning of campaigns for the 2023 elections, and it couldn’t be more timely. Even though the governor and his actions are purely fictional, it’s exhilarating to see art imitating life in real-time.
2. Itura is rich in culture:
Itura is an epic drama series about the nascent kingdom of Ibaokuta and its struggle for peace. It follows the Yoruba people of age and outlines their culture, tradition, beliefs, and hopes. It takes you into the culture, teasing you with incantations and enlightening you with the props. The simplest way to describe the film is ‘rich in culture’, and we love it for that. It’s a welcome segue in a time with new values and appreciation.
3. Both series have such intricate stories:
Covenant tells the story of three seeming strangers on a perilous journey that will change them in ways they cannot imagine. Their journey takes us through their lives as they discover truths that unite them, rock their worlds and ultimately lead them to take vows and make the greatest sacrifice possible through a covenant. Their stories reveal lives fraught with fatal desires for survival, rage and ambition.
On the other hand, Itura follows the beloved king, Jagungbade, who desires an empire based on equality, love, justice, prosperity and peace. He deals with the different interests that change the events in his life and that of his people. The decisions lead viewers on a journey of forbidden love and ambition that ultimately alter the future of Ibaokuta forever.
4. Itura was shot in a village created from scratch and is showcasing upcoming Nollywood talents:
During the MultiChoice Showcase held in September, the Executive Head, Content and West Africa Channels, MultiChoice Nigeria, Busola Tejumola, revealed that they built Itura’s ‘Ibaokuta’ village from scratch. The whole set was created and fitted to bring the Itura story to life. Also, more than 75% of the cast are relatively new faces in Nollywood, and we love it when new talent has a chance to shine. Some cast members include Yemi Solade and new faces like Laide Adeyiga, Korede Ajayi, Tobi Awosika, Shammah Agah, Wumi Tuase, and Austin Onuoha.
5. Covenant has the most excellent mix of actors:
Sometimes seeing your favourite actors come together on a project makes the story infinitely more interesting, and Covenant does this well. The cast is a brilliant mix of veterans and newer actors who have proven their skills through appearances in some of the most popular Nollywood productions. It stars Antar Laniyan, Clarion Chukwura, Funsho Adeolu, Shaffy Bello, Ini Dima Okojie, Nonso Bassey, and Linda Ejiofor.
Covenant airs every weeknight at 8:00 pm while Itura is on every weeknight at 8:30 pm on AM Showcase (DStv Channel 151). Viewers can subscribe to DStv Compact Plus or Premium to enjoy these and many more thrilling titles from the MultiChoice stable.
