Super Falcons Claim AWCON Qualifier Victory

The Super Falcons hosted Ghana’s Black Queens at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena, for the first round of the African Women Cup of Nations Qualifier. Coming off the back of the Aisha Buhari Cup final loss against the Banyana Banyana of South Africa, the Super Falcons came into the game only with intentions to make the country proud.

Uchenna Kanu put the Super Falcons in the driving seat with a brace in the first half, giving the Super Falcons the advantage in the tie. The Super Falcons then went into the second leg with a two-goal advantage over Ghana’s Black Queens.

The reigning African champions were in front in the 21st minute off the first of two sublime headers from Kanu. The second came in the 27th minute from a corner set-piece which doubled the Super Falcons’ lead in the rival matchup. The second half was quieter than the first as there was no way back for Ghana’s Black Queens against a well-composed Nigerian side.

Since the African Women Cup of Nations competition started in 1991, Nigeria has won a record nine times and have never failed to qualify for the competition. The Super Falcons will be looking to maintain those standards going forward into the competition.

MTN Nigeria banners were up at the Mobolaji Johnson Arena as the telecommunication partners of the NFF encouraged the women’s national team to victory.

In September the telecommunications company, MTN announced its partnership with the NFF and has since then shown its love for football by encouraging the National teams to victory. The telco has also provided a great viewing experience for fans and provisions of gears in the stadium.
