Customs Announces Seizure Of 4,010 Bags Of Rice

The Comptroller, Federal Operations Unit (FOU) Zone ‘A’ Comptroller, Kola Oladeji, has reiterated the unit’s commitment to a non-violent approach to combating smuggling activities.

Comptroller Oladeji stressed this commitment during a press briefing at the Unit’s headquarters in Lagos, on Monday, 16 December 2024, on the seizure of 4,010 bags of 50kg foreign parboiled rice.

He explained that the recent seizure was a result of diligent intelligence gathering and proactive border security measures.

The Unit head stated, “We are always professional to the core when it comes to discharging our responsibilities. I tell you, under my leadership, we don’t fire at our fellow human beings. In fact, since I came in, about eight months ago, we have not fired a single shot, and this is an example of such. Our arrests are always based on credible intelligence.”

He further highlighted the detrimental impact of smuggling on the Nigerian economy, particularly on the local rice industry. “It’s affecting our economy and the stability of the Naira, vis-a-vis exchange rates. We have local production of rice, we have local rice mills and they are okay and very nutritious. We cannot be allowing smugglers to be bringing this type of thing. They don’t pay tax, they don’t pay anything,” Comptroller Oladeji emphasised.

Comptroller Oladeji acknowledged the crucial support of sister agencies, particularly the Nigerian Army, in ensuring the safety and security of Customs officers during operations. “Once we call on them, they always answer us, and once smugglers see the military, they will not disturb us,” he stated.

He reiterated the commitment of the FOU Zone ‘A’  to combating smuggling activities and protecting the Nigerian economy. He assured the public that the Unit will continue to employ professional and non-violent approaches in discharging its duties.
