The semi-finals round of games which will air on DStv on Tuesday 18th August and Wednesday 19th August will feature matchups that bookmakers did not predict. First off is RB Leipzig who have been the revelation of this competition. The Julian Nagelsmann-led German side who are second runners-up in the Bundesliga had already surpassed expectations after their triumph over Benfica in the group stages, and an emphatic 4-0 win on aggregate over Tottenham Hotspurs in the round of 16.

Tyler Adams’ deflected effort in the 88th minute of the quarter-finals against Atletico Madrid proved that their surprising run was no fluke, and it will be fascinating to see how they navigate the guile and trickery of the supreme talents on parade at PSG come Tuesday evening.

Paris Saint-Germain will be banking on several decades of experience in Europe as well as the tantalising sophistry of Neymar, attacking prowess of Cavani, and the precision and pace of Mbappé to secure their place in the finals for the first time in their history.

“Games against Thomas are always very interesting,” Nagelsmann said. “Because he has a very good idea of how to play football. I hope that I will also come up with a good idea against him and that my boys will perform as they did against Atletico. Then we will play a very good game.”

The match kicks off at 8:00 PM at Estadio da Luz in Lisbon.

In Wednesday’s game between Germany Champions, Bayern Munich, and French side, Olympique Lyon at the Estadio Jose Alvalade, many will be tempted to write off the latter on the back of Munich’s 8-2 shocking annihilation of Spanish giants, Barcelona. But time and again, the beautiful game has sprung surprises, and the never-say-die spirit of Lyon could prove to be their lucky charm on the evening of August 19.

It’s probably the reason Bayern coach, Hansi Flick refused to bask in the glory of their showing against Barca, instead insisting that only the next match matters.

“It’s a win and we wanted to reach the semi-finals. Okay, it’s impressive; we set a small marker, but the experienced players know that the next game awaits, and we will need the same performance. Let it sink in, analyse, and then prepare for the semi-final,” he said.

Nonetheless, if there’s a dark horse amongst the four teams left in the contest, without a doubt, it would be Olympique Lyon. After goals from Maxwel Cornet and Moussa Dembele saw off English Premier

League runners-up, Manchester City in their 3˗1 quarter-final match. Manager, Rudi Garcia is not setting any limits for his team as they head into the clash with the German heavyweights.

“We know whom we are coming up against next,” said Garcia. “We eliminated a Juventus side who were one of the contenders to win the Champions League and a Manchester City side who were contenders to win the Champions League. Bayern will be exactly the same, but based on what the players have shown, logically we can still hope to get through another round and that is what we are going to prepare to do.”

At the moment, it’s hard to predict which of these semi-finalists will be filing out at the Estadio da Luz in Lisbon, Portugal on Sunday. But one thing is certain: regardless of who squares up against who—we are in for a night of high-octane football on August 23.
