The Executive Governor of Oyo State, Governor Seyi Makinde has charged Corps members to channel their ingenuity and youthful energy towards national development.
Makinde, who was represented by the Commissioner for Youth and Sports, Hon. Seun Fakorede gave the charge in his address at the swearing-in ceremony for the 2020 Batch ‘A’ (stream I) Corps members deployed to Oyo State. He described the service year as a clarion call to a selfless contribution to the development of their state of deployment and the nation in general.
According to him, the Orientation course, being the entry point into the service year determines the success of the service year as it provides a fundamental stage where discipline, integrity, unity and hard work is inculcated into the Nigerian graduate youths.
“To achieve a successful service year, I urge you to avail yourself of the opportunities provided in the orientation course content and also establish a healthy relationship among yourselves, aimed at uniting the teeming youth despite your ethnicity and cultural differences. The ideals of NYSC remains discipline and unity in diversity.”
Makinde encouraged the Corps members to embrace the Skill Acquisition and Entrepreneurship Development (SAED) programme which is designed to empower the Corps members to curb unemployment among graduate youths. He however assured that the government will create a conducive environment as well as provide adequate security for all the corps members in the state.
In his address, the Honourable Commissioner, Ministry of Youth and Sports, who doubles as the Chairman, NYSC Governing Board, Hon. Seun Fakorede urged the corps members to avail themselves of the opportunities of the Orientation course and make use of it for the overall benefit of the nation. Fakorede, who was represented by the Permanent Secretary, Ministry of Youth and Sports, Pastor Oludele Oyadeyi advised the corps members to pursue self-reliance as an escape from unemployment.
Earlier in her address, the Oyo State Coordinator, Mrs Grace Ogbuogebe, intimated the gathering of the various measures put in place by the management of the NYSC Scheme to prevent an outbreak of the coronavirus disease (CONVID-19) during the orientation exercise. Ogbuogebe stated that the management in collaboration with the National Disease Control has provided infrared thermometers, wash hand basins as well as hand sanitizers at designated spots in all the thirty-seven (37) orientation camps and NYSC secretariats nationwide.
She expressed the gratitude of the NYSC Management to the Oyo State Government and the good people of Oyo State for their unflinching support to the Scheme especially now that the government has appropriated funds for the construction of a multipurpose hall and kitchen for the orientation camp.
A total of 2076 corps members comprising 1020 males and 1056 females were sworn on oath by the Chief Judge of Oyo State who was represented by Hon. Justice Aderonke Aderemi.
