Gov Diri Directs Council Bosses To Engage In Large-Scale Farming

Governor of Bayelsa, Senator Douye Diri has directed the 8 Local Government Chairmen in the State to immediately engage in mechanised agriculture to boost food production.

The Governor who gave the directive in a meeting with the Chairmen in his office in Yenagoa urged them to pay particular attention to areas they have comparative advantage while insisting that the state had no reason to be importing certain food crops.

“Our policy in agriculture should go down to the grassroots. I am prepared to support every initiative to boost farming. Let’s focus on the areas where we have comparative advantage such as fish farming, rice, and cassava cropping”, Gov. Diri stated.

Governor Diri directed the State ministries of Agriculture and Natural Resources, Marine and Blue Economy, Lands and Survey and the Local Government and Chieftaincy to work closely with the Chairmen in the acquisition of land for farming and others, stressing that every public office holder in Bayelsa must own a farm.

In their various responses the Chairmen expressed their readiness to carryout the directive of the Governor to key into massive agriculture.

The meeting was attended by the Deputy Governor, Senator Lawrence Ewhrudjakpo, Chief of Staff Government House, Dr. Peter Akpe, Deputy Chief of Staff, Mr. Irorodamie Komonibo, Deputy Chief of Staff, Deputy Governor’s office, Comrade Gowon Toruyouyei, Professor Bekes Sese, commissioner for Agriculture and Natural Resources, Hon. Ebiowou Koku-Obiyai, Commissioner for Information, Orientation and Strategy, Chief Thompson Amule, Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Matters, and Dr. Faith Zibs-Godwin, Commissioner for Marine and Blue Economy.
