Henry Opene Announces BECOMING — A Debut Solo Exhibition Exploring Identity, Grief, And Transformation

Nigerian visual artist and creative director Henry Ogochukwu Opene, working under the name, The Ghor Brand, is set to present BECOMING, his debut solo exhibition opening in Lagos on 20th–21st June 2026. Through a collection of deeply textured mixed-media paintings, the exhibition explores identity, emotional transformation, silence, grief, and the slow, often painful process of becoming oneself.

Rooted in personal history but reaching toward a universal emotional language, BECOMING reflects on the invisible ways people are shaped by expectation, survival, memory, and self-discovery. The exhibition follows recurring emotional states and fragmented figures navigating restraint, awakening, forgiveness, and self-definition.

Known for his tactile visual language, Opene combines heavy impasto acrylic, layered surfaces, stitched materials, and symbolic figurative forms to create works that feel emotionally lived-in and physically weighted.

Raised in Asaba and Agbor, Delta State, Opene grew up in a home where creative expression quietly existed alongside structure and expectation. After building a distinguished career in design and visual communication — working with brands such as Sterling Bank, Nigerian Breweries, and Canon through agencies including Anakle and Verdant Zeal — Opene went on to found Ghor Designs, an independent visual communication studio under The Ghor Brand. Through the studio, he has led creative work for clients including the Aliko Dangote Foundation, Myfood by Hilda, Vixx Interiors, and Trap Door Enugu. In 2023, he stepped away from full-time client work to return fully to the practice that had always called him – Painting.

At the center of BECOMING is the idea that transformation is rarely dramatic. Instead, the exhibition focuses on quieter emotional shifts: the moment a person realizes they have outgrown fear, inherited expectations, or former versions of themselves.

“BECOMING is about the quiet process of leaving behind versions of ourselves shaped by fear, performance, and survival,” says Opene. “It is about learning to hear your own voice after years of living through the expectations of others”.
The exhibition will feature approximately fifteen works, including large-scale figurative paintings and intimate mixed-media studies.
