Here Are The 7 Google Most-Searched Television Titles Available On Showmax

Last week, Google released its annual most-searched titles, and Showmax Original telenovela Wura nabbed a spot on the list of Nigeria’s most searched television titles of 2023.  

Since its release in January 2023, Wura has won over fans and critics alike, earning a 2023 Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) nomination for lead actor Scarlet Gomez in the Best Actress in a Drama, Movie or TV Series category.

Earlier in the month, Showmax held a Wura screening at the Obafemi Awolowo University, Ile-Ife, ahead of the launch of the show’s second season. The screening had several key cast members in attendance, including Martha Ehinome, Casey Edema, Ray Adeka, Lanre Adediwura, Ego Iheanacho, Modesinuola Ogundiwin and Tersy Akpata.

Wura is not the only show to stream on Showmax from the Google most-searched titles – check out our list, which includes a historical drama and a post-apocalyptic thriller.

1. Wura (Nigeria)

Wura follows the lives of characters bonded and divided by the discovery of gold in Iperindo, a small community in Osun state, Nigeria, where the story is set.

The show’s protagonist, the enigmatic Wura Amoo-Adeleke, is a woman with two sides: a perfect wife and a loving mother on one side and a ruthless Chief Executive Officer of the fictional Frontline Gold Mine on the other. Her unrelenting pursuit of success knows no bounds, making her the ultimate Iron Lady.

Wura is executive produced by Rogers Ofime (The Johnsons) and stars Scarlet Gomez (Rumour Has It, Flatmates), Yomi Fash-Lanso (Omo Elemosho, Dazzling Mirage), singer and actress Ego Iheanacho, Martha Ehinome (The Origin: Madam Koi Koi) and Ray Adeka (The Wrong Side of Goodbye).

One of Variety’s Most Anticipated Streaming Titles of 2023, HBO’s The Last of Us is set 20 years after modern civilisation has been destroyed. Joel (Critics Choice Super Award winner Pedro Pascal from The Mandalorian and Game of Thrones) is hired to smuggle 14-year-old Ellie (BAFTA Award winner Bella Ramsey from His Dark Materials and Game of Thrones) out of an oppressive quarantine zone. But what starts as a small job soon becomes a brutal journey as the pair traverse the US, depending on each other for survival.

Based on the critically acclaimed smash-hit video game of the same name, the series earned a whopping 24 nominations for the 75th Emmy Awards, including Best Drama Series and Best Actor and Actress nods for Pedro Pascal and Bella Ramsey.

3. The Idol (Global)

The Idol is a HBO Original co-created and co-written by Emmy-nominated director Sam Levinson (Euphoria), Oscar nominee and Grammy winner Abel “The Weeknd” Tesfaye (who also co-stars), and Reza Fahim.

After a nervous breakdown derailed her last tour, Jocelyn (Lily-Rose Depp) is determined to claim her rightful status as the greatest and sexiest pop star in America. Her passions are reignited by self-help guru and cult leader Tedros (Tesfaye). Will her romantic awakening take her to glorious new heights or the darkest depths of her soul?

5. Shaka Ilembe (South Africa)

Set in the 1700s, Shaka Ilembe tells the story of the heroic rise of the iconic Zulu king, played as an adult by Lemogang Tsipa (The Republic) and a boy by Ntando Zondi.

Produced by the Oscar-nominated team at Bomb (Yizo Yizo), Shaka Ilembe was six years in the making, consulting historians, academics and family descendants, including the late King Goodwill Zwelithini kaBhekuzulu and current monarch King Misuzulu kaZwelithini.

The series has already been nominated as Best Series at the National Film and TV Awards and at the Septimius Awards, where it was up against the likes of The Crown.

6. Cocaine Bear (Global)

Cocaine Bear is loosely inspired by the true story of the “Cocaine Bear”, an American black bear that ingested several kilograms of a bag containing about 34 kg of lost cocaine.

The movie is directed by Elizabeth Banks (The Hunger Games, Pitch Perfect) and stars Keri Russell (The Americans), O’Shea Jackson Jr. (Straight Outta Compton) and Jesse Tyler Ferguson (Modern Family).

7. The Super Mario Bros Movie (Global)

The biggest animated opening of all time, The Super Mario Bros Movie follows a couple of plumbers named Mario and Luigi, a princess named Peach, and an evil Koopa king known as Bowser.

The Super Mario Bros Movie, from Nintendo and Illumination, is based on the classic mega-hit Mario video game franchise loved by generations of kids and kids-at-heart.

The film’s all-star voice cast is led by Kids’ Choice Award winner Chris Pratt (Jurassic World, Guardians of the Galaxy) as Mario and Emmy nominee Anya Taylor-Joy (The Queen’s Gambit) as Princess Peach.
