Insider The Good News For All MTN Subscribers

On Thursday, September 7, 2023, the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC), approved the transfer and assignment of the 10MHz (FDD) in the 2.6GHz Spectrum Band from OPENSKYS Services (OS) Limited to MTN Nigeria Communications Plc.

The 10MHz spectrum being transferred falls under the Frequency Division Duplex (FDD) technology. FDD is a method of using separate frequencies for transmitting and receiving data, commonly used in wireless communication systems. The 2.6GHz Spectrum Band are the radio frequencies valuable for wireless communications, including mobile data services.

What does the spectrum transfer mean for MTN subscribers?

The acquisition of more spectrum will improve MTN’s network strength. Subscribers will enjoy faster internet speeds and better coverage, thereby improving their experience. Commenting on the acquisition, Karl Toriola, Chief Executive Officer, MTN Nigeria said, “This additional spectrum will enable us to deliver on our promise to our customers to deliver quality service, as we continue to support the Federal Government’s vision of deepening broadband penetration in the country.

  1. Increased Broadband Penetration in Nigeria:

Spectrum efficiency is crucial in meeting the National Broadband Plan (2020-2025). Nigeria’s broadband penetration has reached 48% from 41% in January 2022
