MTN Nigeria Pays Glowing Tribute To “Titan Of Industry” Pascal Dozie
MTN Nigeria has paid glowing tribute to its pioneer Chairman, Dr. Pascal Gabriel Dozie, OON, CON, who passed away recently, hailing him as a visionary leader and a national icon whose legacy continues to shape Nigeria’s business and telecommunications landscape.
In a heartfelt statement issued on Tuesday, March 8, 2025, the telecommunications giant described Dr. Dozie as “a steady hand” and “a titan of industry” whose contributions to the emergence and success of mobile telephony in Nigeria were both groundbreaking and enduring.
“A pioneer, statesman, and titan of industry, Dr. Dozie played a pivotal role in the emergence of mobile telephony in Nigeria and in shaping the MTN Nigeria story,” the company noted. “He brought insight, experience, and leadership at a time when bold vision was essential.”
Dr. Dozie, who made the historic first call on the MTN network on May 16, 2001, was instrumental in the early success of the company. His leadership spanned nearly two decades, from 2001 to 2019, during which he served as Chairman of the Board.
MTN Nigeria CEO Karl Toriola described him as “a stabilising force,” adding, “His unwavering belief in Nigeria’s potential and his dedication to its development were truly inspiring. His leadership at MTN Nigeria laid the foundation for our success, and his legacy will continue to guide us in the years to come.”
Among Dr. Dozie’s landmark contributions were the incorporation of the MTN Nigeria Foundation in 2004, the launch of one of Africa’s largest switching centres in 2010, critical leadership during the resolution of a major regulatory fine in 2015, the introduction of Africa’s first 3G feature phone in 2018, and MTN Nigeria’s listing on the premium board of the Nigerian Exchange in 2019.
Ralph Mupita, President & CEO of MTN Group, added, “Dr. Dozie was instrumental in MTN Group’s expansion into Nigeria, providing visionary leadership that has left an indelible mark on our company’s history. His commitment to excellence and integrity set a standard that we continue to uphold.”
Beyond telecommunications, Dr. Dozie’s influence reached across banking, public service, and economic development. He was the founder of Diamond Bank, a founding member and leader of the Nigerian Economic Summit Group, and a former Director of the Central Bank of Nigeria.
Fondly remembered as PGD, he was widely respected for his humility, wisdom, and principled leadership. He received national honors as an Officer and Commander of the Order of the Niger (OON and CON).
“He was a quiet revolutionary,” the statement said. “He could ease tensions with grace and consistently led with clarity and conviction. He was warm, principled, and deeply respected by all who encountered him.”
MTN Nigeria concluded by expressing profound gratitude for Dr. Dozie’s life and service: “His memory will remain a guiding light for MTN, Nigeria’s business community, and everyone who shares his unwavering commitment to progress built on integrity and service.”
