Following the first phase of the highly-anticipated Lagos State Spelling Bee Competition which was concluded in July 2019, the 2nd batch of the MTN mPulse-sponsored competition has begun in earnest at Gladys High School and Tombey Foundation School, Lagos, on Thursday, 3rd October 2019.

This sophomore batch will comprise intra-school competitions in 32 schools across the state that will field qualifiers for the inter-school phase of the spelling bee. Ronik Comprehensive school; Princeton Schools; Gracefield schools; Jextoban secondary schools; Christ the King schools, etc, are among the schools that will compete over the four-week duration.

The winners from the 70 schools at the inter-school phase will vie to become district champions in October. Subsequently, these champions will take up the spots at the grand finale later in the year. The winner will, for one day, take over the reins from MTN Nigeria, Chief Executive Officer, Ferdi Moolman, as the company’s CEO at the headquarters in ikoyi, Lagos.

“The first batch exposed us to the crop of talented young Nigerians living in Lagos and we have seen the multiple ways that the teen and tween offering, mPulse can facilitate further expansion of those talents. As we inch closer to the finals, we are even more excited for the outstanding talents about to be discovered in these other 32 schools,” says Rahul De, Chief Marketing Officer, MTN Nigeria, while speaking about the past and current batches of the competition.

On the company’s sponsorship of the spelling bee, Rahul said “This is an avenue to assist thousands of young Nigerians to build their grammar and vocabulary skills and also learn from their relationship with words and language. mPulse has always been focused on helping them be better versions of themselves in a controlled and safe environment such as the spelling bee.”

One of the winners in the 2nd batch, Adebayo Precious, a JSS 2 student of Apata Memorial High School shared her excitement for the competition: “At first I thought I wouldn’t be able to spell the words, they seemed impossible. Now, I can’t wait for the finals!”
