Things To Know About MTN’s Eco-Friendly SIM Card

MTN Nigeria has taken a groundbreaking step towards sustainability by introducing eco-friendly, biodegradable SIM cards, making it the first telecommunications company in West Africa to do so. This initiative aligns with MTN’s broader commitment to environmental responsibility and its ambitious goal to achieve net-zero emissions by 2040.

In 2021, MTN announced its “Doing for the Planet” strategy, outlining its commitment to protecting the planet and building environmental sustainability. The launch of the eco-friendly SIM cards is a crucial part of this strategy, demonstrating the company’s proactive approach towards minimizing the impact of its operations on the environment and encouraging its subscribers to embrace eco-friendly choices.

The MTN eco-friendly SIM cards are made from biodegradable paper-based materials, designed to reduce plastic waste and promote a circular economy. “Our focus is on encouraging eco-friendly choices and paving the way for a more environmentally conscious future for Nigerians. We believe our customers will appreciate this innovative step towards sustainability”, said Adekemi Adisa, General Manager for Sustainability and Shared Value, MTN Nigeria, during the launch.

Each biodegradable SIM Card contributes to a 90% reduction in plastic waste, addressing the issue of plastic pollution. Additionally, the sustainable manufacturing practices employed in the creation of these SIM Cards reduce carbon emissions associated with both production and disposal, which contribute greatly to climate change.

This eco-friendly approach to delivering connectivity services also ensures zero toxic substances leach into the soil, protecting the local ecosystems. Customers can enjoy uninterrupted services while minimizing the environmental impact associated with traditional plastic SIM cards. The eco-friendly SIM cards offer the same durability and performance as traditional SIMs. The ICT firm’s latest innovation also boosts local manufacturing through its partnership with Secure ID Limited, the first certified smartcard manufacturing plant in sub-Saharan Africa.

The launch of MTN Nigeria’s eco-friendly SIM cards marks a pivotal moment in Nigeria’s telecommunications industry, setting a standard for environmental sustainability across West Africa.
