Tony Elumelu’s Fortune Swells
The fortune of Nigerian billionaire investor and philanthropist Tony Elumelu has witnessed a massive surge, driven by a remarkable market rally in the local energy sector.
As the Chairman of Heirs Holdings, Elumelu’s total fortune is now estimated to be worth well over N2.4 trillion, cementing his position among Africa’s top corporate titan.
Elumelu’s vast investment portfolio spans critical sectors of the economy, including banking, insurance, hospitality, real estate, and power. Managed through his family-owned investment company, Heirs Holdings—founded in 2010—his enterprise ecosystem includes Transcorp Power, Transcorp Hotels, Afriland Properties, United Capital, Heirs Insurance, Heirs Life Assurance, and Heirs Energies.
Notably, he also recently completed his tenure as Chairman of the United Bank for Africa (UBA)—the pan-African banking giant he once served as Managing Director and CEO—and continues to influence its direction.
The latest catalyst behind Elumelu’s swelling wealth is tracked directly to a strategic investment in dual-listed oil and gas giant, Seplat Energy Plc.
According to official ownership disclosures, Elumelu holds an indirect stake of 120.4 million shares—representing a 20.07% equity position—through two corporate members of the Heirs Group: Heirs Energies Ltd and Heirs Holdings Ltd. This makes Heirs Holdings the single largest disclosed shareholder in the energy firm.
The investment has reportedly yielded spectacular gains over the last few months. Following Seplat’s closing share price of N12,320.60 on Tuesday, September 1, 2026, Elumelu’s 20.07% stake reached an unprecedented valuation of approximately N1.483 trillion (equivalent to $1.28 billion).
This marks a significant leap from the figures captured in Seplat’s unaudited H1 2026 financial statements.
On June 30, 2026, the company’s shares closed at N11,363.90, valuing Elumelu’s holding at N1.368 trillion. The latest stock market rally translates to a staggering N115.18 billion gain in market value in just over two months.
It is interesting to note that this massive value appreciation comes at a defining moment for the business leader. Elumelu, who joined the Seplat board as a Non-Executive Director earlier this year, is officially slated to step into the role of Chairman on January 1, 2027.
Reports monitored by highstreet.ng reveal that the robust performance of the stock highlights growing market confidence in indigenous-led ownership and the expanding influence of local players in navigating Nigeria’s strategic energy landscape.
