Why You Should Care As Coca-Cola Sponsors Solar-powered Recycling Hubs In Abuja And Lagos

Walking down most streets in Abuja and Lagos, the amount of plastic waste defacing the cities’ landscape and littering the drainage systems is alarming.

Coca-Cola is at the forefront of solving this long-standing problem through the continuous funding of recycling initiatives. Recently, The Coca-Cola Foundation (TCCF) provided a grant to the Initiative For The Advancement of Waste Management in Africa (W.A.S.T.E AFRICA), a non-governmental organisation, to promote waste as a valuable currency for social good and economic inclusion in Abuja and Lagos. If you live in either of these cities, here’s how your city will be impacted by this grant:

Creation Of Eight Solar-powered Recycling Hubs:

Through the Cash 4 Trash initiative, the funding received will be used to build eight solar-powered recycling hubs in communities such as Nyanya, Zuba, Bwari, Kuje, Gwagwalada, Jikwoyi, Galadimawa and Makoko.

Conversion of Waste to Cash:

Residents can now turn their waste into wealth while adopting the habit of recycling. Talk about a win-win!

Economic Empowerment Of 3,000 Waste Pickers:

Over 3,000 waste pickers, many of whom are living in indigent homes with little or no educational backgrounds, will gain employment through the Cash 4 Trash initiative. The waste pickers will also be provided with financial literacy, safety training and as well as Personal Protective Equipment (PPE).

Enrollment Of 800 Out-of-School Children:

Through the NGO’s Bottles for Books initiative, 800 out-of-school children will be enrolled in schools guaranteeing their right to quality education.

Better Landscape and Drainage

With more recycling hubs and even more waste pickers recruited, these cities’ landscapes will get a much needed uplift.
